A NEW VIEW OF GOD AND ITS EFFECT ON WELL-BEING @ Traverse City Masonic Temple Building
Jun 18 @ 7:30 pm

Phillip Hockley, CS

Speaker: Phillip Hockley

— When most people think about life-changing moments, they may not think of a lecture on Christian Science. That wasn’t why I attended a lecture for the first time; I didn’t expect to walk out a new person. But I found something in that lecture that was indeed life-transforming. Christian Science gave me a new view of God that I’d not had before: a view of God as Love itself, divine Love that loved me fully. I also discovered that this loving God was not the source of my troubles (which were many) but the solution to them. My life began to improve quickly after that and I became a healthy man after many years of suffering.

There’s no question that I was jubilant about the way my life was being transformed. But what impressed me the most was finding out that these kinds of breakthroughs aren’t one-time, personal miracles. God’s love is available to everyone, and there’s even a textbook on Christian Science healing that explains the power of God’s love in our lives: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.

What I’ve gone on to learn, and what I’ll share in my lecture, is that the perspective of God and reality that Christian Science opens up is one that offers freedom from whatever in our lives seems painful, debilitating, or limiting. I’ll talk about a 19th-century woman, Mary Baker Eddy, who after a life-threatening injury, discovered this new view of God for herself and went on to explain her discovery and its Bible-based principles in her book Science and Health. And I’ll share how that discovery is still relevant to our lives today because of what it reveals about God’s great love for each of us and its powerful, life-transforming effects.

TIME IS NOT A FACTOR IN YOUR LIFE @ Battle Creek Kool Community Ctr, Valentine Rm
Jun 24 @ 7:00 pm

Dave Hohle

Speaker: Dave Hohle, CSB

— This talk by Dave Hohle explores how we can begin to gain spiritual freedom from limitation associated with time and age.  Time is a constant in physics, but totally disappears in metaphysics.  Time measures matter, but divine Mind or spiritual consciousness is immeasurable and infinite.

This talk distinguishes between time and timelessness, age and agelessness, and encourages freedom from mortal limitations associated with time by understanding more about the spiritual nature of life. This understanding leads to more freedom, more productivity, and more harmony.

Time is not a factor in your life is not about how to get the most out of a 24-hour day, but how to gain dominion by living in the timeless, stressless spiritual now.  We’ll look at what we mean by eternity.  Is it a never-ending series of nows?  What is immediacy?  The Bible says, “now is the accepted time; now is the day of salvation.”  Could salvation mean, in part, freedom from the mortal tyranny of time?

The talk points out the advantages of identifying ourselves truly as God’s spiritual idea right now – continuous, ageless, useful, and as indestructible as He is – rather than as limited, aging mortals.

Finally, the listener is encouraged to allow his or her thoughts or moments to be God-moments – God-inspired and God-motivated.  In this way the listener will be able to begin demonstrating that truly, time is not a factor.

MAKING MEANINGFUL CHANGE: HOW GOD’S LOVE CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE AND THE WORLD @ Ann Arbor Public Library
Jul 19 @ 4:00 pm

Mark McCurties

Speaker: Mark McCurties, CS — “The desire to change ourselves, to improve our character, our relationships, our life prospects can also go beyond just the boundary of our own lives and the four walls of our home. Many men and women around the world have a sincere yearning to improve the collective experience of mankind,” says Speaker Mark McCurties.

“In this lecture, I will explain how God’s loving and saving power is the greatest agent for change, and that through a right understanding of God, His power can be seen and felt right here and now, bringing health and peace to the world.”

The ideas in this lecture are based on the teachings of Jesus as recorded in the Bible, and as discussed in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy.

McCurties has had a life-long love of the Bible and its inspiring message of individual triumph over adversity. After graduating from college he spent a number of years in the field of education where he worked as a camp director, experiential educator, resident counselor, and athletics coach. While working with young people, he had many opportunities to witness the healing power of God, and these inspiring experiences eventually led him into the full-time public practice of Christian Science.

Mark McCurties is a member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship. He travels from his home in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
